What is Viagra?

  • Viagra (sildenafil) is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
 
How does it work?
  • It works by dilating the blood vessels that carry blood to the penis. When the penis is sexually stimulated, the dilated blood vessels can more easily initiate and maintain an erection.

Should I take Viagra with food?

  • You can take Viagra without regard to meals.

Are there any special instructions?

  • Take your Viagra 30 minutes to one hour before sexual activity. Some patients find that taking Viagra up to four hours before sexual activity works well for them.

What is the usual dose?

  • Usual starting dose – Take 50mg by mouth one hour before sexual activity.
    • Your doctor could increase or decrease your dose, depending on your results.
    • Do not take more than one dose per day.

Cautions

Who should avoid taking Viagra?

What are the risks?

  • Viagra can be dangerous for patients with cardiovascular conditions. Discuss your risk with your doctor if you have any of the following:
    • High or low blood pressure
    • History of heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening arrhythmia within the last six months
    • Pulmonary hypertension secondary to sickle cell anemia
    • Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems. They could adjust your dose as appropriate.
  • Viagra can cause a sudden loss of vision or hearing.
  • Viagra can cause persistent and painful erections. You could be at an increased risk if you have any of the following:
    • Anatomical deformation of the penis (angulation, curvature, cavernosal fibrosis, or Peyronie disease)
    • Sickle cell anemia
    • Multiple myeloma
    • Leukemia
  • If you experience an erection that lasts more than four hours, contact your doctor immediately.
